Music as language

Our roots

The Suzuki approach treats music as a “mother tongue,” mirroring how children naturally learn to speak through constant listening, repetition, and encouragement rather than starting with abstract rules. Much like the roots of a tree, this method provides the essential, hidden foundation that nourishes and anchors a student’s entire musical development.

By establishing this linguistic base early on, the “roots” of the Suzuki approach support the growth of a student’s ability to communicate, create, and express themselves fluently as they mature.

Learning & speaking

Our Growth

Just as children eventually use their language skills to tell their own stories, Suzuki students learn to “speak” music fluently by improvising and composing, transforming their technical foundation into a personal creative voice.

Gathering & sharing

Our Grove

Through improvisation and composition, students experience the joy of full creative expression, turning their musical knowledge into a unique and vibrant language. These shared creative practices help build a supportive and connected musical community, where every voice is heard and every contribution is celebrated.

Together, these individual voices create a flourishing musical forest, where each unique melody strengthens and supports the ecosystem of our shared community. We start at our own instruments & use our musical connection to reach out to other musicians in the world!

TESTIMONIALS

As a parent I enjoyed watching my child’s creativity grow. They get so much practice in playing other people’s works and composing allows them to feel what it is like on the other side. They got to feel the frustration of composing with a deadline balanced with the satisfaction of a piece that is entirely their own. I think it also increases their self confidence as they see how excited other people are at hearing something they made. It was also interesting to see how some musical themes that they learned from their repertoire showed up in their pieces: like Alberti bass!

We feel SO lucky and grateful to have Becky in our lives! She is a magical piano teacher and makes everything fun! Working with Becky is not merely taking 'piano lessons', but learning to love music, piano, as well as being part of a piano community through group lessons, gatherings, and regular recitals. Her supportive and creative nature is very motivating to the kids and parents alike. Being in her positive presence every week is a gift — she is the absolute best!

Becky is an excellent piano teacher and connects easily with the students. My son started playing piano at 5 yrs old and his confidence has grown a lot in one year of learning to play piano, introducing himself to a room of people, and performing at recitals!

I used your ideas with two students today and they were very successful. I loved getting a hook from each of them. I started the lesson with it and it made the whole lesson feel more connected.
